Without caring mentors, positive youth development just doesn’t happen. At Pop Robotics, we take coaching seriously. We believe that a meaningful, quality relationship between coach and participant is vital to our program.
How many years have you been involved with FIRST? I started mentoring in 2013: FLL 4 years, FTC 1 year; FRC 4 years
What college did you attend? University of Texas, Austin and University of Texas San Antonio
What major and degree did you earn? Economics degree from University of Texas and MBA University of Texas, San Antonio
Why did you chose to be a coach for POPCS Robotics and FIRST? I chose to be a mentor for POPCS Robotics to spend time with my children and to learn with them and their friends.
What is your most memorable experience in robotics? My most memorable experience from FLL was when my 10-year-old could solve the robot problem easier than I. In FTC, my most memorable experience is when our small, young team advanced to Super-South Regionals. In FRC, I was most proud of our team when we made the playoffs at the World Championship.
How many years have you been involved with FIRST? Founder of FRC – 3 years, FTC – 3 years, and FLL – 3 years
What college did you attend? Texas A&M University
What major and degree did you earn? Computer Science/ Electrical Engineering
What is your current occupation? Vice President, Program Management – SCA Promotions, Inc.
Why did you chose to be a coach for POPCS Robotics and FIRST? FIRST promotes robotics as the “sport of the mind”. I enjoy working with the students so they can learn the importance of engineering principles such as CAD, problem-solving, software development, and machining. FIRST robotics creates an environment similar to a business. There is marketing, budgeting, sponsorship, engineering, design, improvement, and redesign all incorporated into a robotics season. All these components within the goal of teamwork and cooperation make FIRST robotics a rare sport in teaching our youth to become technology leaders.
What is your most memorable experience in robotics? Watching kids design and then machine flat pieces of aluminum into a full robotics chassis.
How many years have you been involved with FIRST? FLL, FTC, FRC – 6 Years —FRC
What college did you attend? Texas Tech University
What major and degree did you earn? BS Mechanical Engineering
What is your current occupation? Engineering Manager in the Semiconductor Industry
Why did you chose to be a coach for POPCS Robotics and FIRST? Initially, it was to spend time with my son on a common interest but later evolved to much more than that and it is just plain fun.
What is your most memorable experience in robotics? Even though I enjoy the FIRST experience as much or maybe even more than the students, I get the most satisfaction of helping them realize their potential. I believe that the FRC program truly mimics real-life challenges that face those that choose to pursue a career in the STEM fields and I love to watch the students gain confidence as season and year goes on. And this happens every year.
