Engineering in Our World
Prince of Peace High School Adds Engineering Course
POP is excited about the opportunity to offer a year-long engineering course as one of our science electives. Biology, Chemistry, and Physics still constitute our core science curriculum but this new Engineering elective permits us to serve students who want a general knowledge of engineering. These might be students targeting careers in technology, management, medicine, science, computers, communications, and a host of other disciplines, many of them not even related to science.
Dr. F. Lynwood Givens, our current AP Chemistry and Physics instructor will teach this course. Dr. Givens brings a broad background of industrial experience in this field as a general manager of a medical technology company, vice-president of research for a satellite company, and a retired Chief Technology Officer of the nation’s fifth largest defense contractor. Dr. Givens holds five patents and recently published a book, The Persuasive Wizard: How Technical Experts Sell Their Ideas, that discusses the business of engineering.
The course, itself, is an exciting blend of engineering technology, structure, and design such as is currently needed for a future in telecommunications, photography, graphics, illustrations, the internet, information technology, ecology, medicine, health care, multimedia, and robotics, to name a few. The curriculum is adapted especially for Prince of Peace Christian School from a nationally recognized program for High School students. This course will prepare our students for a broad variety of college majors.
Engineering is not just for science and engineering students. This generation is overwhelmed with technology and all students, regardless of their future careers, need to have basic knowledge in this area. The instruction and laboratories for this course will coordinate with our very successful FIRST Robotics program as well as introduce other broad areas in which engineering has had an impact on our lives.
